RPE in the gym.

In the gym, RPE is a score from 1 to 10.

RPE means rating of perceived exertion. After a lifting set, you give the effort a score from 1 to 10. Ten is the maximum of that set. Eight is a hard effort, with room left. In Peak Health that score goes on every set, next to the weight and the reps.

What is RPE in the gym?

A set is the group of reps you do in a row, at the same weight, before you stop. The RPE of that set is the score you give the effort, from 1 to 10.

Example: squat, 80 kg, 5 reps. When you racked it felt like an 8: hard, with room left. You write 8.

How do you use it on a lifting set?

When you finish, you give the score. Ten is the maximum of that set. Eight is hard and leaves room. Many working sets live at 7 or 8. Peaking and heavy singles go higher. Technique work goes lower.

The number moves from day to day. The same 80 kg for 5 reps can be a 7 on Tuesday and a 9 on Thursday.

If it is your first month, write what you think. You may be off. The score sharpens with sessions, not with a chart.

What do you do with that score?

If the plan asks for 5 reps at RPE 8, you put the weight that today feels like an 8. Some days that will be 82 kg. Others, 78 kg. Weight is in kilograms.

In Peak Health you write it on the same lifting screen, next to last time. How to log it on every set is on RPE and RIR.

Leftover reps are on what RIR is. How the two scales relate is on the difference between RIR and RPE.
